You know that meme with a guy gradually painting clown makeup on their face? That might be an allegory of my posts on AI over the last months, as well as an evolution of my thoughts on it. And I know I’m not alone here. I went all the way from “AI is great” through “I’ll stop using AI cause it fries my brain” to “I’m using AI for work daily”....
This blog is free from AI involvement in writing posts. I treat it as an outlet for things I ruminate on. English is not my first language, that much is obvious. I am also well aware of the fact that my English writing skills have a lot of room for improvement. Nevertheless, I never ask generative AI to verify my writing, format it or whatnot. I try doing my best to at least be easy to understand, and I hope I’m doing a half decent job at achieving that goal....
Reading tech-adjacent internet, be it Hacker News, tech X, tech Reddit or random news outlets, feels increasingly weird these days. Between tech CEOs repeating AI will take our jobs in 6 months in yet another 6 month cycle, engineers worried about their livelihoods, and new versions of large language models popping left and right the way Javascript frontend frameworks used to, we are definitely living in interesting times. On one hand, the never ending stream of “it’s all over for software development” news might be pushing some people into panic mode, understandably so....
By the end of this year, I will be 44 years old. I consider myself a successful person, happily married and in a good place in life. I am also a massive gaming nerd, and proud of it too. I’ve been thinking about it a lot recently. We all know ChatGPT is an amazing tool. Used for a variety of ways, its usability and capabilities increased exponentially over the course of last months. And yet, even in the latest iterations of GPT4, I feel it still struggles with a lot of things. It often lacks context to be able to solve complex programming problems. It does write code, but most of the time does not care about architecture or code structure as much as us, engineers....
